“My wife and I are both nurses at Hilton Head Hospital and we’re expecting our second child in October. I just can’t say enough good things about this program; it helps alleviate some of the financial responsibilities of being a parent and also with the growing cost of living in this area.”
– Dean Smith
Nurses are the heart and backbone of our healthcare system, yet Beaufort county, Jasper county and Hampton county are facing a critical nursing shortage that is putting the health and wellness of the Lowcountry at risk.
To help increase the number of ADN and BSN graduate nurses employed in Primary Care settings in Beaufort and Jasper Counties, and keep nurses from leaving the area, the South Carolina Nurse Retention Initiative offers a unique “post-graduation” financial award program in return for a work commitment – providing up to $9,000 (BSN) and $6,000 (ADN) over two years based on merit, dedication to the nursing profession, financial need, educational mobility and long-term commitment to practice in Beaufort, Jasper or Hampton counties – including specific geographic areas where funding has been made available.
The Community Foundation of the Lowcountry and several individuals have generously provided the initial funds to build the program’s infrastructure and launch the program in Beaufort County. We awarded four scholarships in our first year of operation. With a goal of funding 20-30 scholarships per year, we now need to raise $250,000 a year to continue to award these important scholarships – helping to retain nursing talent in our area, and ensuring quality healthcare for everyone throughout Beaufort, Jasper and Hampton counties.
The need is critical – and you can help. Become a “Friend of the SCNRI” and make an investment in this important initiative to attract and retain nurses here in Beaufort County and Jasper County to help mitigate this growing nursing shortage.
